We started our Uruguan adventure in Carmelo, the wine country. The beautifully rustic Narbona Wine Lodge is what dreams are made of, with just five rooms and hidden treasures to be discovered at every turn. It is a bit of an r & r stop, where low key leisure activities prevail: walking the vineyards, riding bikes or horses through the winding countryside, being a wine maker for a day, reading a book by the pool, having an artfully presented meal in the enchanting wine cellar, enjoying a glass of wine while watching the sunset or feeling the heat of a blazing fire off your porch while star gazing.
We were lucky to have this picturesque view:
This was our our lovely porch. At night it was just chilly enough to start a fire.
The Narbona Wine Lodge was founded in 1909 and is the oldest vineyard in Uruguay. Hints of the lodge's old school roots are found everywhere throughout the property.
Narbona prides itself on making all they can in house with an amazing selection of homemade traditionally cured cheeses, yogurts, pastas, breads, olive oil and of course wine. They also have an impressive herb and vegetable garden. Not only does everything taste fresh but you can also taste the love that is put into every meal.
The Narbona Restaurant has been preserved from it's orgins of a grocer's shop. The wooden shelving and counters are all orginal, dating back from the turn of the century.
Ahh, the charm.
Excursion day to the nearby 4C's. Great lunch spot and nice to tour the property. The owner of the Narbona Wine Lodge donated this property to the Four Seasons in hopes it would help put the sleepy but beautiful town of Carmelo on the map.
Strolling the vineyards on Narbona's property became a daily ritual.
Giant bright orange doors lead to the wine cellar.
Thank you for the memories, Narbona.
